Christians of many traditions have kept the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity since 1908. In the northern hemisphere it is usually held in January, but in Aotearoa New Zealand, as in many southern hemisphere churches, we keep it between Ascension and Pentecost. In 2027 that is from Thursday 6 May to Sunday 16 May.
The 2027 theme
The resources for 2027 were prepared by the Irish Council of Churches and the Council for Ecumenism and Dialogue of the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference. The theme is “Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom” (Luke 12:32). The resources include an ecumenical service and reflections and prayers for each of the eight days.
Taking part where you are
We encourage churches to mark the Week together in their own area. Here are some ideas:
A combined service with neighbouring churches one evening during the week
A shared meal or social gathering
Working together on something local, such as a beach clean or a community garden
Praying for each other’s churches in your Sunday services
A prayer relay, where a different congregation leads prayer for unity on each day of the week
If you are planning something, we would be glad to hear about it. Let us know through our contact page and we can share it here.
